The Easter Bunny Alternative

“Be of good cheer: I have overcome the world.” -John 13:63

During the holiday season last year I worked with a company that did an alternative to Elf on a Shelf called “The Star from Afar.” It taught children the true meaning of Christmas by bringing the wise men to the star each day, then finally on Christmas finding Jesus in the manger.

Well, that same company is at it again, but this time for Easter. They have created The Easter Story Game which teaches the real story of Easter. You might think of it as an alternative to the Easter Bunny, or at least a way to re-focus the holiday. I too can get caught up in the Easter bunny, the eggs and the candy. But I want my children to know those things are not why we really celebrate Easter. We celebrate Easter because our Lord Jesus Christ died for us so that we could live eternity with Him in Heaven.

The Easter Bunny Alternative

That is why I love this game so much. It teaches children not just about what happened the day Jesus rose again, but it takes them through the last week of his life. Each day, starting on Palm Sunday, there is a story and an egg to open. As you go through the stories it tells of Jesus, the people he encountered and the places he went.

Our kiddos were super excited to play with the eggs and learn what each one represented. A little complicated for our two year old, but she was still eager to play along. She was able to understand the cross meant Jesus and the last egg, which was empty, meant Jesus went to Heaven. Our four year old asked to read the book multiple times and to match each egg to the story. He was then able to tell his sister why the last egg was empty. I would call that success.

We might still have a visit from the Easter Bunny, BUT that will not be the focus of our holiday. Our family is going to be looking for that empty egg, the one that means the most. The one that symbolizes that we will have eternal life with our Heavenly Father. “He has risen, He has risen indeed.” AMEN!

Thanks for hosting this giveaway friend! I think this is such a great idea, I love that they made it so fun but also so meaningful. We actually don’t even do the Easter bunny in our house, we do an egg hunt and baskets but my kids know that Mike and I are the ones that do those things.

Thanks friend! I love that y’all make it known that you hide the eggs! Takes the pressure off of being sneaky!!

THANK YOU for this great recommendation! My husband and I were just talking last night about what traditions we want to create with our new baby since this is our first Easter with him. We didn’t know how to explain why we have a bunny and eggs. Cute but totally not relatable to Christ. lol. 🙂 Just bought!
