Alaska Port Adventures

“I want adventure in the great wide somewhere.” -Belle

Our trip to Alaska on the Disney Cruise was absolutely stunning. And although we had a blast on board the ship, we also made some pretty incredible memories off the ship. If you missed all my tips on traveling on the Disney Cruise Line you can go read that here, otherwise read on for our excursions once off the boat.

Skagway:

This was our first official stop off the boat and believe it or not my husband and I actually decided to do an excursion on our own; ziplining. We had done it once before in Maui and just fell in love with zooming over pretty landscapes and the bit of adrenaline rush you get when jumping off the platforms.

We got to ride up a pretty steep terrain in this awesome truck before getting all geared up for our day. If you are like us and love big adventures this was amazing. We were zip lining through the forrest, over waterfalls, it was absolutely breathtaking. They even had us doing flips and other crazy dismounts along the way.

We were able to get back to the boat in time for lunch and to take the kids into town. The quaint city of Skagway was walking distance from our ship so we slowly wandered along and found some great backdrops for photos. There were old trains, a train depot, totem poles and even a junior ranger station that the kids stopped at to become certified junior rangers.

Juneau:

This day we had been planning the longest and was probably my favorite! It is something that I can check off the bucket list; we took a helicopter ride up to a glacier, walked around on the glacier, drank water from one of the waterfalls and just got to experience one of the most amazing sites of our lives.

After the helicopter ride we then went dog sledding with our own team of dogs. This was such a blast! We learned so much about the dogs; like they actually prefer it to be 20 degrees BELOW ZERO! They just love the cold weather, the colder the better. They were able to take commands so quickly and listen to their musher even when she spoke in hush tones. The type of breed you see in the movies are not really dogs that run in Iditarod races. If you were expecting to see the big, white, fluffy dogs that is strictly for Hollywood. These dogs were just incredible in every facet.

We even got to hold the brand new puppies that they breed there on the premises. It was so hard not to want to take one home!

Ketchikan:

In Ketchikan we had heard about The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show and knew we had to check it out. I actually contacted the show directly and they were so sweet to offer us a discount on our tickets, but as always all opinions are my own. The outdoor theater was walking distance from our ship, which made it super convenient and quick to get to once we could disembark.

From start to finish it was a super fun show for kids of all ages. There was a friendly competition between two teams of lumberjacks and the audience was divided up into teams to help cheer on their favorite guys.

I have to say I was quite impressed with all of the different skills and tricks these lumberjacks could do. I have seen a few competitions on tv and this was just like it. They had to chop, saw, chisel, carve, climb and balance on logs and they were able to do it all with a great sense of humor.

We also decided to walk around the adorable town after the show and see a few more things. We took a short hillside trolly and found ourselves walking a little pathway that led to a great view of the ship.

We were able to do so much while visiting Alaska, and yet, I think I could still go back to see even more. Have you ever been to Alaska? If so, what was your favorite city? If not, is it on your list to visit?
